Why Whitby in particular?

Three geological factors. The cliffs between Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay contain fossilised hardwood strata from the Jurassic - wood from monkey puzzle trees (Araucariaceae) preserved in sediment around 180 million years ago. The stratum is readily accessible (cliff falls, beach gathering, mining). And the material can be finely worked, taking a warm, deep polish that volcanic jet or Spanish jet cannot match.

How large was the Whitby jet industry at its height?

In the early 1870s - a few years after the death of Prince Albert (1861) - more than 1,500 people in Whitby worked directly in the jet industry. With a total population of around 12,000, almost every family in the town was involved. More than 200 workshops and small manufactories were registered, alongside suppliers, polishers, mount-makers and dealers.

What set Whitby jet apart from other jet?

Whitby jet is hard (2.5–4 on the Mohs scale, against 1.5–2 for Spanish jet), takes an unusually deep polish and shows a characteristic warm black with a faint brown translucency. Spanish jet from Asturias is softer and prone to splitting; German jet (the Swabian Jura) is rarer and comes in smaller pieces; Siberian jet is generally more brittle. Whitby jet was regarded as the premium standard.

What happened to the industry after 1890?

Decline in three stages. Material scarcity: the easily accessible cliff strata had largely been worked out, and deep mining became uneconomical. Changing taste: the loosening of Victorian court-mourning codes in the Edwardian era drastically reduced demand for matt black materials. Competition: French jet (pressed glass) and vulcanite served the low-price market segment. By 1920, fewer than twenty of the original 200-plus workshops remained.

Whitby is the small harbour town on the north-east English Yorkshire coast whose jet deposits and workshops supplied the Victorian mourning-jewellery system with its most important material foundation in the nineteenth century - at the peak around 1870, more than 1,500 cutters and carvers there worked for the global mourning market.
