How is the print taken?

Two methods are common: a thin self-carbonising film, used at the funeral home or at an appointment during the person's lifetime, and a soft silicone pad impression from which a digital image is derived. Both translate without loss into an engraving file.

Can a print still be taken from someone who has died?

Yes, provided there is still time - usually within the first few days after death, as part of the funeral preparations. In Germany many funeral directors offer to take the print as part of the care they provide.

Is fingerprint jewellery only for bereavement?

No. Many pieces are made during a person's lifetime: as a gift between partners, as a keepsake of one's own parents, as family jewellery. The occasion determines the meaning, not the technique.

How durable is a laser engraving?

A cleanly cut engraving in gold or silver will outlast generations. Visible wear only appears after decades of regular wear and can be re-polished - provided the cutting depth was chosen generously enough in the first place.
