Why is platinum so dominant in Edwardian jewellery?

Three reasons. Technical: from about 1895 platinum could be extracted and worked industrially; before that it was a rare speciality. Optical: platinum is brighter and cooler than white gold and makes diamonds look more lively. Structural: platinum is very strong and permits extremely fine settings that would break in gold or silver. The characteristic pierced Edwardian brooches with their diamond mosaics are possible only in platinum.
