How much ash does a memorial diamond require?

The standard requirement is 100 to 500 grams of cremation ashes, depending on the final size of the diamond. The carbon is chemically extracted from this quantity - typically around 1 to 5 grams of pure carbon remain at the end, enough to synthesise a diamond of 0.2 to 1 carat. The hair variant needs considerably less: around 10 grams of well-preserved hair.

How long does production take?

Six to twelve months, depending on size and process. The crystal growth itself in the HPHT reactor takes four to eight weeks; before and after it come carbon extraction, purification, cutting and certification. Reputable providers do not offer express delivery - the growth phase in the reactor cannot be shortened.

Is the diamond 'real'?

Chemically and physically it is identical to a natural diamond - pure carbon in a diamond lattice. Geologically it is not a natural diamond (it did not form under mantle pressure over millions of years, but in a reactor over a few weeks). Gemmological certification states this expressly: laboratory-grown or synthetic. For the person wearing it the difference is functionally irrelevant.

What does a memorial diamond cost?

Heavily dependent on size, colour and process.
