How are the ashes worked into the glass?

The process is a special form of classical lampworking. The sequence: 1. Preparing the rod: a borosilicate glass rod (typically 6–10 mm in diameter) is heated at one end in the flame of a glassworker's torch (1,200–1,600 °C) until it becomes viscous. 2. Forming the gather: the molten glass is applied to a rotating stainless-steel mandrel and formed into a drop or sphere. 3. Introducing the ashes: a very small quantity of sterilised, finely ground ash (typically 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon) is sprinkled onto the hot glass surface, where it initially adheres. 4. Enclosure: a second layer of glass (often coloured, sometimes clear) is applied over the ashes; the ashes are enclosed within the glass and, as it cools, form the characteristic cloud, bubble or star inclusions. 5. Annealing: the finished piece is cooled slowly in an annealing kiln (typically 8–24 hours on a controlled temperature profile) to avoid stress in the glass. 6. Finishing: the finished bead or pendant is polished; pendants receive a precious-metal bail.

What distinguishes memorial glass from a memorial diamond?

Both are forms of remembrance that integrate ashes directly into the final material - but they differ fundamentally. The memorial diamond (see Memorial Diamond): carbon is extracted from the ashes or hair of the person who has died and converted, over 6–12 months in an industrial high-pressure, high-temperature process, into a synthetic diamond. The diamond consists of the person, but is visually indistinguishable from any other synthetic diamond. Cost per piece typically €3,000–25,000. Memorial glass: a small quantity of ash is enclosed within the glass, but remains perceptible as a visible cloud, bubble or star inclusion. The link to the ashes is visually present. The process takes a few hours to a few days. Cost per piece typically €200–1,500. Memorial glass is thus more immediate and more visible, while the memorial diamond is transformed and concealed.

Which forms are usual in memorial glass?

Several typical object forms. Pendants: teardrop, lens or heart-shaped glass pendants (typically 2–4 cm) with a precious-metal bail; the cloud of ash is visible at the centre. Beads: single glass beads (typically 1–2 cm in diameter) to be threaded on a chain or bracelet. Several beads can be combined - one for each family member. Marbles: spherical glass marbles (typically 2–5 cm in diameter) as a memorial object for the hand or the desk. Eggs: egg-shaped glass objects (typically 3–6 cm) with a stand; a particularly widespread form in the USA. Sculptures: more elaborate glass sculptures in figurative form (a bird, a heart, a flower, an abstract shape). Vases: larger hollow glass objects (typically 10–25 cm high) in which the ash inclusions are distributed across several layers of glass. Sets of drinking glasses: some workshops make family drinking glasses with ash inclusions - a rather unusual form of remembrance for shared family occasions (weddings, christenings) that keeps a link to the person who has died.

How much ash is needed - and how does one obtain it?

Each memorial glass object needs a very small quantity of ash (typically 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon, that is around 0.5–1.5 grams). A typical adult cremation produces 2–3 kg of ashes, so setting a small amount aside for memorial glass barely reduces the main quantity. How the ashes reach the workshop: the family contacts the funeral home and asks for a small quantity to be set aside. Germany applies the principle of Friedhofszwang (see Friedhofszwang - Mandatory Cemetery Burial (Germany)); the official release of quantities of ash to the family is not provided for, but is quietly tolerated in practice by many funeral homes as long as the bulk of the ashes is buried in the regular way. In Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and many other countries the release of ashes is legally unproblematic. The workshop then typically receives the ashes in a small sealable glass or plastic capsule; sterilises them again if necessary (autoclave at 121 °C for 30 minutes); and begins work. Sensible practice for the family: contact the workshop in advance with a photograph and a description of what is wanted, agree the glass colours and form together, and only then send the ashes.
