What is guilloché used for in mourning jewellery?

Its principal application in a mourning context: as a geometric ground for translucent enamel. The finely incised line pattern is covered with transparent black or coloured enamel; the enamel fills the recesses and forms a smooth, glassy surface through which the guilloché pattern remains visible. As the light falls on it, a lively, flickering shimmer arises - the waves or spirals appear to travel according to the viewing angle. This technique characterises above all the finer mourning lockets (see Mourning Locket), memorial pendants and the reverses of mourning brooches of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. How does guilloché differ from laser engraving?

Two fundamental differences. Tool: guilloché is a mechanical technique using a steel cutting tool guided with precision on a specialised lathe (guilloché machine, rose engine). The lines are true recesses with a V-shaped cross-section - perceptible with a fingernail, refracting the light. Laser engraving (see Laser Engraving), by contrast, vaporises or thermally discolours the surface. Pattern structure: guilloché necessarily produces geometric, mathematical patterns (sine waves, spirals, rosettes) - determined by the mechanical cam curves of the machine. A laser can trace any pattern at all - organic lines, photorealistic structures, fingerprints. The two techniques are complementary: guilloché for classic, hand-crafted, rhythmic ornament, laser for individual digital originals.

Is guilloché still practised today?

Yes - above all in high-grade jewellery and watch manufacture. Workshops in Switzerland, France and Germany preserve the technique within a comparatively small tradition of specialists. In a mourning-jewellery context, guilloché is today a niche technique used for particularly high-quality memorial lockets or as a historicising reinterpretation. The purchase and maintenance costs of a guilloché machine (typically 30,000–100,000 € for a second-hand nineteenth-century original, several hundred thousand euros for a new build) and the years of training required make the technique a workshop speciality.
