What distinguishes laser engraving from classic hand engraving?

Three essential differences. Precision: the laser achieves line widths of 5–20 µm - finer than any hand engraving (typically 80–200 µm). This makes fingerprint lines, microtext and photorealistic portraits possible. Speed: an engraving that takes several hours by hand is finished in 2–10 minutes with a laser. Repeatability: a digital original yields an identical result every time - important for family sets or pieces made for siblings. Against that: hand-cut engraving (see Engraving and Inscriptions) carries an individual, hand-crafted aura that the laser does not reproduce. High-quality workshops often combine the two - laser for precise dates and lines, hand engraving for ornamental accents.

Which materials can be laser-engraved?

Practically all jewellery materials. Precious metals: gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rose gold, white gold - the fibre laser (1064 nm wavelength) is the standard here. Other metals: stainless steel, titanium, aluminium - likewise fibre laser. Glass and stone: CO2 or UV laser; caution with gemstones (some stones are sensitive to heat). Wood and leather: CO2 laser. Plastics: fibre or CO2 laser depending on the polymer. In memorial jewellery, engraving on gold and silver for pendants and rings dominates, along with stainless steel for modern memorial pendants.

Can fingerprints be laser-engraved directly?

Yes - this is the standard method for modern fingerprint jewellery (see Fingerprint Jewellery). The sequence: the fingerprint is captured digitally (via a tablet sensor or a high-resolution scan); the line structure is converted into a vector path; the laser traces this path precisely across the jewellery surface, removing metal locally. Relief height is typically 0.02–0.15 mm - fine enough to preserve the tactile experience of the original line structure. An alternative is 3D printing followed by casting (see 3D Printing and Memorial Objects); which method is preferred depends on the form of the piece, the material and the workshop's equipment.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving is the most important modern engraving technique in memorial jewellery: a focused laser beam removes material from the jewellery surface with precision and leaves a permanent mark accurate to a fraction of a millimetre - for names, dates of death, handwriting, fingerprint lines or QR codes.
